Overview

This SOP covers standard procedures for all field survey crews. Following these procedures ensures consistent data quality, crew safety, and professional conduct on all job sites.

Pre-Field Checklist

Before departing for any field assignment:

  1. Review job order — Confirm job number, location, client name, and scope of work
  2. Check equipment
    • Total station or GPS unit: battery charged, stored properly
    • Prism rods, tripod, data collector
    • Safety equipment: vests, hard hats, flagging, cones
  3. Verify vehicle — Fuel, lights, tire pressure, first aid kit
  4. Download control — Ensure existing control points are loaded in data collector
  5. Review plat/deed — Understand what is to be located or established

On-Site Procedures

Arrival

  • Park vehicle safely, visible, with flashers if near traffic
  • Don PPE before exiting vehicle near roadways
  • Identify yourself to property owner if present

Instrument Setup

  • Level instrument to within spec — re-check if ground is soft
  • Verify backsight with at least two independent checks
  • Document setup in field notes: point ID, height of instrument, date, crew

Data Collection

  • Call out each point as it is shot — verify with crew member
  • Record descriptions accurately: FIP, IPF, SIP, etc.
  • Do not interpolate or estimate — survey grade only
  • Flag points as set per company standard

Wrap-Up

  • Verify all points collected per scope before leaving
  • Document any anomalies or discrepancies in field notes
  • Photograph any unusual conditions (encroachments, evidence)

Safety Protocols

  • No field work in electrical storms — shelter immediately if lightning within 5 miles
  • Roadway work requires certified flagger and proper traffic control setup
  • Notify supervisor of any unsafe conditions before proceeding
  • Document all incidents on the incident report form

Data Transfer

  • Transfer data collector to office within 24 hours of field work
  • Back up raw data before processing
